Since the GhostBSD live system runs entirely in RAM, adding more applications means a larger system in RAM, which means a higher RAM requirement to install GhostBSD. The same goes for drivers and firmware. As of now, it takes about 5GiB+ to install GhostBSD.

ericbsd To keep those RAM requirements low, you might offer a window manager instead of a full desktop environment - then let the user decide if (s)he wants a DE and which one. LXDE (legacy) is still supported a good option for low-end machines, too.

Applications - much more than desktop environments - are what uses up RAM in a hurry.

Is there variance, depending on hardware?

No problem with live boot and installation with 4,096 MB given to a VirtualBox guest. GhostBSD-25.01-R14.2p1.iso

Robin The third-party drivers and firmware take up a lot of space. Remove all that, and you have a slimmer ISO. The next installer will have two sessions: the live one and the installer session. The system will enter both sessions and ask the user what to do: install or go to the live session. The installer session will run in a minimal environment.

For Ubuntu users, there are more applications available by default. Are any of those apps that you would like to see by default. Do we want to pursue parity with Ubuntu, or something different?

vimanuelt I run Ubuntu for work, and it comes with way less than before. There is no media player by default now. At least the version IT installed is less than I remember.

I reckon that's up to @ericbsd . Parity with a big, heavy behemoth like Ubuntu isn't possible without needing a zillion and twelve terrabytes of RAM to install it, though, if I have understood him right.

Yes, you are correct. Eric is responsible for the project. He is the project owner and maintainer. 😊

We should allow Eric to determine the contents of the ISO. He can specify the minimum RAM requirement. I have offered several options for change. He has chosen the direction, so we are all set.

No. Pool.img is ₆ GiB before compression.

ericbsd thanks, I'm not likely to test anything new until after the switch from FreeBSD to Linux. (Trying to wind things down in the FreeBSD environment.)

I am currently running GhostBSD 25.01-R14.2p3, with the ISO built from the ghostbsd-build system. It will be interesting to examine the differences between this build and the release in GhostBSD's jenkins. :-)

It looks like it could be a problem with HDD Bottlenecks. It might be time to move everything to a system with SSDs.

It looks like it's better. I have forced the minimum for 0 to 4 G. This has improved the situation. The server's inactive RAM takes up all the ARC that the server needs.
