LightDM freezes on latest update from 14.3p0 to 14.3p2

I discovered that the problem with ghostbsd-drivers ghostbsd/ghostbsd-ports80171c54c736 → 111cdcc3af48 was updated and set to XLIBRE by default. In the new release, ghostbsd-drivers was removed, but the old installation still has it installed. I apologize for the lack of testing of ghostbsd-drivers. I did set the default to XORG, so any upgrade now should work as expected.

I did a pkg update; pkg upgrade on 14.3p2 and pkg installed a new xconfig file. However, lightdm still freezes the keyboard and mouse. Then I did a pkg upgrade -fy on 14.3p2 and the problem persists.

I noticed that you made a change to a makefile an hour ago. Does something need to be recompiled?
Should I look for a package called "ghostbsd-drivers" and install it manually with pkg?

I tried to install "ghostbsd-drivers" on 14.3p2 but pkg said that it was already the latest version.
Alright, I think I figured it out, the "ghostbsd-drivers" on the repo has the same version number as the one on my machine.

You updated a makefile indicating that "ghostbsd-drivers" needs to be recompiled, but that file isn't on the repo yet.

This time, I did a pkg upgrade and pkg removed the xlibre drivers and installed the xf86 drivers.

However, the problem persists, where lightdm starts but the mouse and keyboard no longer work and after about a minute the cursor stops blinking.

It might be possible that the GPU drivers got uninstalled. If you are on an Intel or AMD GPU, you might need to install drm-kmod`. If you are on NVIDIA, you will need to install nvidia-driver.

That hiccup definitely caused a lot of issues.

I did a pkg install drm-kmod and pkg said that it's already installed and the latest version.
It's an intel GPU. On a HP Elitedesk 800 G3 mini.

boot/modules/i915kms.ko appears to be listed in the kld_list in rc.conf.

Sometimes freebsd changes where to look for that file, but I don't know if they did that recently.

Make sure with pkg info | grep xlibre that nothing xlibre-* is installed, and try pkg upgrade -fy.

All of the xlibre packages were removed.
I tried pkg upgrade -fy again, but it's the same result, where lightdm freezes up after starting.

Can you reproduce this problem on a test machine?
Upgrade from 14.3p0 to 14.3p2. There was never a 14.3p1, so far as I'm aware, maybe that caused a problem.

If the problem doesn't exist on a test machine with an intel gpu maybe I need to download the live installer. The one on the website is still 14.2p1.

Same issue with my old Compaq Presario CQ57-229WM 4G
Cannot use keyboard.
Can boot and use from backup.
Is this fixed in the repo?
Can I delete updated BE and re-update from station.
Note: I cannot try anything for awhile. It will be about 6 hours for me to backup my files to another laptop.

I wasn't able to fix the problem with Eric's suggestions, I think he needs to look at a test machine.
If the problem doesn't exist on a test machine, then maybe I need to download a fresh installation, but there isn't one on the website yet.

A new CD probably will not work for me. Laptop only has 4G memory. Last time I reinstalled, I have to start will really old version and update.

If you have a bootable BE from before the upgrade, make a new one from it. Make sure to have a bootable one that you will not touch in case you have a problem.
To create from the booted BE:

bectl create your-be-name

Create from and not active BE:

bectl create your-be-name -e be-to-clone

I just need to set the updated BE to default.
