You have likely corrupted the zfs dataset.

Importing the zroot pool on Devuan may have altered properties, datasets, or boot-related metadata, breaking GhostBSD’s boot environment (BE). Devuan’s ZFS version might be older or newer than with GhostBSD’s OpenZFS 2.2.6 or later, causing subtle corruption. If the pool wasn’t cleanly exported from Devuan (zpool export zroot), it could be in an inconsistent state.

Steps to Fix the Unbootable GhostBSD ZFS.

1. Boot into a GhostBSD Live CD/USB

Download a GhostBSD ISO (e.g., GhostBSD 24.07) from ghostbsd.org.
Create a bootable USB and boot into the Live environment.

2. Check ZFS Pool Status

In the Live environment, list available pools:

  sudo zpool import

If zroot is listed, import it read-only to avoid changes:

  sudo zpool import -o readonly=on zroot

Check pool health:

  sudo zpool status zroot

If errors or corruption appear, proceed to Step 4. If healthy, continue.

3. Inspect and Repair Boot Environments

List boot environments with bectl:

  sudo bectl list

Look for the active BE (marked N for next boot or R for root). Example output:

  BE        Active Mountpoint Space Created
  default   NR     /          10G   2025-01-01

If a valid BE exists, ensure it’s active:

  sudo bectl activate default

If no BEs are listed or the default is missing, proceed to Step 4 or 5.

4. Restore from a Snapshot (if Available)

Check for snapshots on the zroot/ROOT dataset:

  sudo zfs list -t snapshot -r zroot/ROOT

If a snapshot exists (e.g., zroot/ROOT/default@2025-04-01), roll back:

  sudo zfs rollback zroot/ROOT/default@<snapshot_name>

Note: This reverts changes post-snapshot. Only proceed if the snapshot is valid.

If no snapshots exist, skip to Step 5.

5. Reinstall the Boot Loader

Reinstall the FreeBSD boot loader on /dev/sdb1:

  sudo gpart bootcode -b /boot/pmbr -p /boot/gptzfsboot -i 1 /dev/sdb

-b /boot/pmbr: Installs protective MBR.
-p /boot/gptzfsboot: Installs ZFS-aware GPT boot code.
-i 1: Targets /dev/sdb1.

Verify the boot partition:

  sudo gpart show /dev/sdb

Ensure /dev/sdb1 is freebsd-boot.

6. Export the Pool

Export the pool cleanly:

  sudo zpool export zroot

7. Reboot and Test

Reboot into the GhostBSD disk:

  sudo reboot

If it fails, note the boot error (e.g., “ZFS: cannot find bootfs”) and proceed to Step 8.

8. Advanced Recovery (if Needed)

If the system remains unbootable:

Manually Mount and Inspect:

Import and mount the pool:

    sudo zpool import -f zroot
    sudo zfs mount zroot/ROOT/default

Check /boot and /etc in the mounted filesystem. If critical files are missing, restore from a backup or snapshot.

Recreate Boot Environment:

Create a new BE:

    sudo bectl create newbe
    sudo bectl activate newbe

Reinstall GhostBSD:
- If the pool is unrecoverable, back up data (e.g., /home) to an external drive from the Live CD.
- Reinstall GhostBSD on /dev/sdb and restore data.

Preventing Future Issues

Read-Only Imports: On Devuan, import with:

  zpool import -o readonly=on zroot

Match ZFS Versions: Ensure Devuan’s ZFS version matches GhostBSD’s (OpenZFS 2.2+). Check:

  zfs version

Update Devuan’s ZFS:

  sudo apt update && sudo apt install zfsutils-linux

Snapshot Backups: Before importing on Devuan, snapshot the pool:

  sudo zfs snapshot zroot/ROOT/default@backup

Clean Exports: Always export after use:

  zpool export zroot

look my post above and you see that all recomendations i did using ghostlivecd.

Now i whant recover bootloader of ghost. Why i cant did that via ghostlivecd, zsf not mounting here.

Above explained that happens because Linux has another version of openzfs. Why here was no any warnings about useing wrong versions of openzfs can lead to disaster?

You made 1 attempt at using the correct GhostBSD environment and then started using an alternative OS again.

We can’t help you use another OS. Using another OS with incompatible versions of ZFS will only create further issues.

Using an alternative OS created your problem in the first place.

You can ask the ZFS project to add more safety rails to the file system.

Did you make any backups or boot environment backups before your shenanigans?

Based on what you've shared, it looks like we should be able to recover by recreating the Boot Loader.

I have a couple spare machines for these types of experiments and will take a run at stepping through recreating Boot Loader this afternoon.

I'm going to go review the steps in a live environment with a test box and see what was blocking the bectl from functioning per Eric's guide, but I believe the Recreating the Boot Loader is going to be required. I will update this forum shortly. Thank you for providing the detailed console captures, they do help understand what state things are in.

In ZFS, partial corruption = whole dataset invisible.

You can try ZDB to inspect manually: zdb -e zroot

This can see if block structures and object sets still exist even if the pool looks empty.

Be aware that not all ZFS features are compatible across different operating systems. Pools created with newer features on FreeBSD may not be fully supported on Linux. You will need to ask the Linux community devs responsible for OpenZFS support to update to the current OpenZFS version. Also, disregard the bad advise given on the FreeBSD Forum. You will need to do your own research. I am disappointed in the advise given.

Based on the information from your output, here’s the safe importability analysis:

FreeBSD (GhostBSD, TrueNAS, etc.)

Safe to import.
Your pool version (5000) and enabled features (hole_birth, embedded_data, vdev_zaps_v2) are fully supported by FreeBSD 13.x, 14.x, and CURRENT (15.0).
The pool was originally created with a FreeBSD livecd, meaning native compatibility is assured.
Because whole_disk=0, you must import the partition (/dev/gptid/...) instead of the raw disk (/dev/ada0 etc.).
Recommendation: Use zpool import -d /dev/gptid zroot if it does not show up automatically.

Linux (OpenZFS)

Conditionally safe to import, but caution is needed.
Linux OpenZFS 2.1.x to 2.2.x fully supports hole_birth and embedded_data.
vdev_zaps_v2 is newer (introduced by Klarasystems), and some older OpenZFS Linux builds (especially before 2.1.0) may not recognize it.
If you use OpenZFS 2.2.x or newer, it should import cleanly.
Important: Linux treats GPT partitions differently; you must manually point it to the correct partition (likely /dev/sdX2).
Use zpool import -d /dev/disk/by-partuuid zroot or specify by partition ID.

Windows (Windows OpenZFS)

Risky to import, not recommended casually.
Windows OpenZFS ports are experimental and usually lag behind FreeBSD/Linux versions.
Windows builds from 2023–2024 may lack full support for vdev_zaps_v2.
Best-case: pool imports readonly.
Worst-case: import errors, possible metadata confusion.
If you must try: zpool import -o readonly=on zroot.

General Caution

Always export the pool cleanly if possible before moving it between systems.
If the pool was forcibly imported or accessed by Windows incorrectly before, corruption risk rises.
If Windows touched the partition table (MBR or GPT rewriting), a deeper forensic check (zdb -l or zpool status -v) is recommended before trusting the pool again.
