Update changed a lot!

Using the Xfce flavor: Most of my wallpapers disappeared from /Pictures/Wallpapaers after yesterday's update and reboot. Iit defaulted back to the standard /usr/local/share/backgrounds/ghostbsd/ folder. But if I try to change it back, several of my old favorites don't appear in that folder. Opening Thunar to look, I see that they're all there, they just don't appear in Desktop Settings when I select that folder from which to choose a wallpaper.

It's still nimble and faster than any Linux OS I've used on this machine, but noticeably slower after this update. Looks like Xfce 4.20 is here now, which is great! I've been looking forward to seeing the newest Xfce.

But how do I get my ocollection of old favorite wallpapers to reappear in Desktop Settings?

Robin I wonder why. It is hard to say for me since I do not use XFCE. Although maybe @Neville knows.

Robin I haven't had any trouble with my update. Could be something to do with 4.20 version of xfce. I also haven't noticed any difference in speed

I have always created a wallpaper directory in my ~/HOME directory, and add that to the MATE settings

Perhaps the new Xfce (4.20) messes up because they're working on Wayland compatibility.

I installed MATE, figuring I could just switch sessions and try out MATE. _But when I logged out and back in, the "Session Chooser" did not offer a MATE session. Instead there were two options:

Xfce (standard)
Xfce (Wayland)

I chose Xfce Wayland and BINGO! There was my desktop again, just as before. Unexpected, but delightful.
Equally surprising was the fact that MATE was not offered by the "Session Chooser" when logging back in.

The only thing I noticed after the last upd was, that my background pic only existed for my first workspace, no. 2.3 & 4 had the standard wallpaper of GhostBSD! After taking off the hook, "for all workspaces" in desktop settings and manually change back to my wallpaper and hook again, all workspaces had same background. So there are a few changes in the background with new Xfce...

I just visited the Xfce website and read some warnings about Wayland still being experimental and buggy. It bears watching as implimenting bits of 4.20 with prior versions is probably an issue.

To clarify, just in case it's helpful:

The MATE stuff I installed was only the GhostBSD-MATE-metapackage, not anything else.
The session that works as before didn't happen until I logged out, chose Xfce Wayland_, which didn't work until I logged out again and chose the standard Xfce session again. Very strange.

But I wonder: Why is there no MATE option among my session choices? Very curious.

well, I have no answer on this unfortunately. Because I know of the "experimental" status of Xfce & wayland I never tried this nor using Mate. I m still on the normal xfce community edition and willing to keep it like that for the time being...

Neville nope, haven t experienced any speed loss or other problems by switching to 4.20 either, except for this background minor flaw... 😎
And gladfully all other functions, incl. my "beloved" VirtualBox VMs also run as best as they could.

Back on a regular X-11 Xfce session, everything is good, and the familiar speed and responsiveness is back and I'm delighted. But I think I'll check the forums for a fay or two before updating next time.
