Great! :D
Hang on while I reboot and enable lightdm
No, let aside slim and lightdm for now ... you should login (text login) and your PATH should already include /sbin and /usr/sbin .... that's the issue.

Close to SLiM login but very different to lightdm login and I think the same as lightdm with .xprofile "fix" login

This look correct, but is not the same you reported a couple of posts ago:

Yes, ASX you're correct it is not the same.
Under SLiM, Lightdm and text login the echo $PATH outputs are all different however.
I'll check SLiM output again soon.

echo $PATH returns:

/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin

I'll try now with slim enabled
what changed between above and below ?

The above echo $PATH output is when logged in with lightdm and then in a terminal entering "echo $PATH"

The below entry is a text login (no SLiM, no lightdm login) opening a terminal then entering "echo $PATH"

So the difference is I used lightdm to log in
So the login manager changes the echo $PATH output

When I use SLiM to login this is the echo $PATH output:

/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin

I have to log off now :) it's almost 1.00 am here.

Ok, look like I misunderstood your sentence: "no fish and lightdm" as "no fish and NO lightdm".

Now, that it is clarified that the default login will contain /sbin and /usr/sbin .. to me it looks like
lightdm is overwriting/redefining the PATH so that it will contain only:

"/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin"

we are getting there ... now, the next question is:

where/when (related to lightdm) the PATH is redefined ?

So early ? :D
