25 Sept 2020 upgrade to 12.2 Stable failing

Post by owengardiner »

Hi,
On my Lenovo laptop that has been happily running GhostBSD for 8 months or so, the latest upgrade results in the screen loading the mouse pointer and then just malformed graphics lines on the top of the screen. The option to just type in my password doesn't do anything and trying to get into other TTYs don't work via Ctrl Alt F1 - F4

After a hard power cycle, I can choose the boot environment of the backup before the upgrade and 12.1 Stable boots well. I've done this upgrade twice now with the same effect.

I'm not sure how to diagnose the issue - but wiling to learn :-)

Further information available if you know what to ask for . . .

Cheers.

In my case, when the graphics part is loaded, it stay in black screen

No mouse, no keyboard

I boot into the previous boot environment, but how I erase the wrong part a made this boot environment the default

GhostBSD is based on FreeBSD 12.1 stable. 12.2 is a upcoming https://www.freebsd.org/.

And if GhostBSD change its base to 12.2 or 13 it is up to ericbsd.

Hello,
I don't know why but my desktop upgraded to FreeBSD version 12.2 too : Output of uname -v is FreeBSD 12.2-STABLE GENERIC. With a mate panel issue.
According to /etc/pkg/GhostBSD.conf and /etc/pkg/GhostBSD.conf.pkgnew, my pkg repository seems to be http://pkg.us.ghostbsd.org/stable/${ABI}/latest.
Regards.

slughorn : Do you have issues with this update (I created a topic because of a mate panel issue. Eric said he's working on it.) ?

Hello dismas,

at the moment I am back on virtualbox with GhostBSD and I have no big issues so far.
From december 2019 until June this year I used GhostBSD on real metal, but got some issues:
1. I got no good sound on this machine with a lot ob background noise. On my spare PC were no sound at all.
2. Could not burn any DVD or CD. I tested a lot of burner applications. Video-DVDs I can see. This works.
3. Virtualbox on GhostBSD with Win 7 as guest froze all the time. I could not work with it. I need my taxes app. It runs only on win.
GhostBSD on virtualbox as guest with debian as host works fine. Sound is ok. But the mouse has some issues. If I scroll it the windows change. For example if I open firefox on the virtual machine and click on different links an scroll the mouse, the windows change.

You need not to apologize for Frenlish. I speek Genglish (German English). People on this forum are from all around the world. ;-)

Hi, I saw there was a newer set of upgrades available so I gave it another go 3/10/2020 ~ 09.00 UTC. Same result, looks like X is started, mouse cursor briefly appears, screen distortion whilst it tries to load the login screen and then it hangs again with some crud on the screen. Keyboard and mouse inoperative. Can't log into another session.

Thank goodness for multiple boot environments :-)

Maybe this can help. In the beginning, I used to have no sound at all until I realized that the default output for my box is not the front but the rear one. The command cat /dev/sndstat gives me :

Code: Select all

Installed devices:
pcm0: <NVIDIA (0x0081) (HDMI/DP 8ch)> (play)
pcm1: <NVIDIA (0x0081) (HDMI/DP 8ch)> (play)
pcm2: <Realtek ALC889 (Rear Analog 7.1/2.0)> (play/rec) default
pcm3: <Realtek ALC889 (Front Analog)> (play/rec)
pcm4: <Realtek ALC889 (Rear Digital)> (play)
pcm5: <Realtek ALC889 (Onboard Digital)> (play)
No devices installed from userspace.
which indicates the rear analog output as the default. I just plugged my headphones here to have sound.

Same thing for me but eventually I realized I don't need to burn CD/DVD anymore.

Sorry I don't use VirtualBox. Maybe you should give Wine a try.

OK, thanks :D I thought it was a good idea to inform my readers I don't speak English fluently.
