kernel: pid ⋯ (pkg-static), jid 0, uid 0, was killed: failed to reclaim memory

Post by grahamperrin »

GhostBSD in VirtualBox, with 4096 MB memory given to the guest and 8.5 G swap.

With an active ZFS boot environment named 20240908-2141-issue149, running 24.01.1:
  1. I upgraded update-station, from 4.9 to 5.9
  2. I reinstalled ghostbsd-mate and other important packages that were removed during step 1
  3. reboot -r
  4. I accepted the invitation to use pkgbase
  5. I allowed an upgrade from 24.01.1 to 24.07.2 – unsupported (at my own risk)
  6. I ignored the coincidental Update Manager dialogue for installation of updates
  7. I accepted the invitation to restart – for the pkgbase-upgrade boot environment to change from R to N
  8. I allowed update-station to begin installing updates – again, at my own risk.
That is, a condensed list. There was more than one attempt to upgrade.

Sep 9 00:47:36 mowa219-gjp4-ghostbsd-14-vm kernel: pid 1893 (pkg-static), jid 0, uid 0, was killed: failed to reclaim memory

The first and second killings were prior to successful upgrade.

The third killing was during step 8 above.

This topic is:
  • focused on the subject line – kernel: pid ⋯ (pkg-static), jid 0, uid 0, was killed: failed to reclaim memory
  • for reference only, I do not seek support.
The killings of pkg-static are somewhat surprising, given the amount of memory and the amount of swap, however I occasionally find comparable killings with test cases that do not involve GhostBSD.

Please note

I do not encourage attempts to perform unsupported upgrades.

I know how to dig myself out of holes that I dig for myself, I can not promise to dig anyone else out of a hole

The Detail button in the dialogue has no effect – not surprising, since pkg-static was killed.

I expect updates to succeed following a restart of the OS. Maybe not with the next attempt, but eventually there should be a complete run without a killing.

With regard to unwanted removal of packages such as ghostbsd-mate, there is work in progress, thanks to Eric.

The upgrade to PkgBase was not my best work, but it was less problematic than previous major changes. Did you get to a GUI?
