[SOLVED] Touchpad and video support

Post by descasa »

Hello all. Just installed Ghost 3.5 on my Lenovo ThinkPad SL400. Being a TP, it has both a trackpoint and a trackpad. Both work although I'd like to be able to use the right border of the trackpad for scrolling, much like the wheel on a mouse. Instructions on the 'Net refer to a synaptics driver, and I remember being able to load that when I was installed FreeBSD -- which unfortunately was thrashed somehow, and which is why I'm trying GhostBSD now. So far so good but as I mentioned, I'd like to be able to use the synaptics driver. If I recall rightly, I had a line in rc.conf (?) which read

Code: Select all

 synaptics_enable="true"
.

Also, I used the Driver "vesa" technique to load and install GhostBSD. Now, I'd like to use my Intel Graphics chip (not sure which one it is, will check when I boot into <ugh> Windows). xinput -list didn't detect the touchpad:

Code: Select all

xinput -list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4	[slave pointer (2)]
⎜   ↳ PS/2 Mouse                              	id=7	[slave  pointer  (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3	[master keyboard (2)]
    ↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ AT Keyboard                             	id=6	[slave  keyboard (3)]
Not sure, but I think it should've been able to detect the Intel Graphics chipset as well but anyway...

I combined the two questions into one because I think the Synaptics and Intel Graphics support were coded in the source. Either that, or there were some .ko files for them. I didn't find any in /boot/modules, which is where I think they should be.

Any suggestions on how to get Intel Graphics and Synaptics touchpad support? Will I have to compile the kernel? No big deal, I've done it before but I'd rather not do it again as it'll deprive me of much of the use of my computer while it's at it.

Thanks in advance, regards

I will like that you try GhostBSD 4.0 BETA1 and let me know if its fix. If it is not I will like to help you to help to fix that problem.

Hi Eric, thanks for getting back to me. Support for my laptop's Intel graphics chipset does seem to work in 4.0 BETA1 -- I didn't have to go in and modify xorg.conf, it gives me the gdm (?) login screen. I wanted to test the synaptics support but thought it might be too much work for a live system so I tried the install. But first, the results from fdisk:

Code: Select all

and pc-install.log:

So I asked gpart (through install) to delete the old GhostBSD 3.5, then created a new partition. Install said that it deleted the old partition and created a new one, then I got an error message telling me to refer to pc-install.log for details. Refer to lines 6-8.

Hmm, maybe I'll try booting into one of my Linux live CDs and running gparted from there to delete the partition.

You might have problems to install it, my thought was to see if GhostBSD 4.0 BETA 1 boot and see on which driver it tries to boot.

Hi Eric. You mean I didn't have to install it? Oh well, no worries, my 3.5 was only a few days old and I didn't have much data there. Anyway, I presume you'll want to look at my Xorg.0.log? Attached, if the Upload attachment option works.

[EDIT] ### extension can I use anyway? All right, embedding it instead:

Seems to me that X did recognize my Intel chipset, not sure if it's using it though.

Re: Touchpad and video support

Post by descasa »

For anyone else wanting to tweak his or her touchpad, I got it working, thanks to this thread on the FreeBSD forums. In brief:

in /boot/loader.conf:

Code: Select all

hw.psm.synaptics_support="1"
in /etc/rc.conf:

Code: Select all

#conf for Trackpoint and Trackpad
    moused_enable="YES"
    moused_ums0_flags="-F 200 -A 2.0,1.5 -a 2.0 -r high"
in /etc/sysctl.conf:

Code: Select all

# Synaptics Touchpad
    hw.psm.synaptics.vscroll_hor_area=0
    hw.psm.synaptics.vscroll_ver_area=-600
    hw.psm.synaptics.vscroll_min_delta=50
    hw.psm.synaptics.vscroll_div_min=100
    hw.psm.synaptics.vscroll_div_max=150

    hw.psm.synaptics.min_pressure=20
    hw.psm.synaptics.max_pressure=220
    hw.psm.synaptics.max_width=10

    hw.psm.synaptics.weight_current=3
    hw.psm.synaptics.weight_previous=6
    hw.psm.synaptics.weight_previous_na=20
    hw.psm.synaptics.weight_len_squared=2000

    hw.psm.synaptics.div_min=9
    hw.psm.synaptics.div_max=17
    hw.psm.synaptics.div_max_na=30
    hw.psm.synaptics.div_len=100

    hw.psm.synaptics.multiplicator=10000

    hw.psm.synaptics.margin_top=200
    hw.psm.synaptics.margin_right=200
    hw.psm.synaptics.margin_bottom=200
    hw.psm.synaptics.margin_left=200

    hw.psm.synaptics.na_top=1783
    hw.psm.synaptics.na_right=563
    hw.psm.synaptics.na_bottom=1408
    hw.psm.synaptics.na_left=1600

    hw.psm.synaptics.window_min=4
    hw.psm.synaptics.window_max=10

    hw.psm.synaptics.taphold_timeout=125000
If there's anyone out there for whom this doesn't quite work, gimme a holler, because it means I missed something.

[EDIT] I don't think this is specific to Thinkpads, may work for trackpads for other laptops as well.
