Why BSD over Linux

Folks,

New user to BSD but have used Linux for around 10 years, avoid Windows wherever possible.

Experimenting with GhostBSD and impressed so far with Live image.

Simple question, I hope. As Unix and Linux share roots but use different file system and program compilation, given that Linux has more hardware support why do users prefer BDS?

If you search in the net you will get all the answers. But it is always the view of someone. Some tend to Linux, others tend to BSD like:
* https://unixsheikh.com/articles/freebsd ... ystem.html
* https://helpdeskgeek.com/linux-tips/bsd ... fferences/

But it is not a question about BSD over Linux. Because it is an: BSD AND Linux. They share many tools. Compare the man pages and this forum:https://www.unix.com/.

For my humble opinion: I'm nosy, I like new experiences.

I know a lot of people suggest the less popular an OS the less likely it gets hit by attackers therefore more secure.

Thanks for the links have read and are very informative and interesting.

I have used various Linux distros and GhostBSD. The honest truth I can say is for the average user there won't be a whole lot of difference. If you want to be able to open a web browser and type some documents then they will be mainly the same. The major differences are things you almost don't even see in my experience. The licenses are very different but does the average user care or will ever notice ? People can bring up ZFS vs EXT4/BTRFS but I don't think the average person would notice or care. I haven't experienced any major issues on EXT4 in my time and even my recent experimentation on BTRFS was stable. People can bring up jails but if the person you're talking to has no idea what that is will it matter ? People can say that BSD is a whole OS vs a kernel but when you download a complete Linux distro that is ready to go does it matter ?

My advice to anyone would be to try out various Linux distros and GhostBSD and come to their own conclusion which best fits their needs.

For me the reason I got into using GhostBSD on my system was part curiousity; part the passion the BSD folks such as Benno Rice had while talking about it; and part my growing admiration for their license. I'm a Libertarian at heart and the notion of giving more personal freedom to the end user in how they use the product is a plus in my book even if one could argue that it has caused some harm such as several major corps not giving anything back. A plus to that is the ability to see who gives back code out of the kindness of their hearts and who are scumbags.

I have enjoyed my foray into BSD land, especially since they had Mate installed from the jump, if for no other reason than learning a new OS and it's ins and outs is interesting to me.

Hello Geffers,

BSD is more designed as a coherent whole between the operating system and user applications while Linux is basically a core of OS on which developers have glued software. The hardware recognition on BSD is not yet at the level of Linux but this last includes proprietary drivers while there is none under BSD.

BSD has no proprietary blobs at all ? This is news to me. Is there any links you can give that would confirm that ? Everything I can find says the opposite although it is mostly talk by users.

One thing I noticed was the dormant LibertyBSD project which was a deblobbed version of OpenBSD. If OpenBSD had no proprietary blobs then why was it necessary to have a deblobbed version ?

I like the community (-support); somehow the license; not such big sudden changes like in linux; the fact that freebsd is not just the kernel; ZFS (!); the performance; the mate desktop shipped with gostbsd; the great stability and somehow simplicity if you once understand the system (me still dont a lot but seems easier to me than linux).

So I prefer GhostBSD over Linux, but Ubuntu or Fedora are ok, I dont dislike them in any case. But Windows 10 I dislike a lot!
