T490 installation - UI lockup

Post by bonzibuddy »

Hello all,

Last night I installed GhostBSD on a Thinkpad T490. I'm not sure what triggers it, but invariably the whole desktop UI locks up. When this happens, the system appears to be unresponsive. E.g. I cannot ctrl+alt+f2 into a different tty. I am using a completely default install.

I've done some basic troubleshooting - I maxed out the graphics RAM in my BIOS (I read somewhere that this can help?). On my last attempt, I was only running top in a terminal window and it hung within 20 minutes.

Has anyone seen something like this before? My next step will be to get sshd running and see if an SSH session persists through this lockup stage.

Other than this issue, it looks beautiful and I'm excited to try it out :D

8G of ram is the bare minimum, for the OS and for zfs.

how full is the hard drive?

df -h

should tell you

I was not aware of the RAM requirement - I'll add some more :) This could be the culprit, IIRC the memory assigned to graphics is taken away from the system, so I might be running too lean on RAM.

The hard drive is at 4% capacity (9.6G used, 211G avail)

I've added 16G for a total 24G of memory, which is recognized by the system. It still locks up. When this happens, the fan kicks into max speed and the laptop gets quite warm. No keybord/mouse input is registered, and the clock does not update.

I'll try seeing if an ssh session stays up during a lockup tonight

update: I reinstalled ghostbsd and its had its longest runtime so far (nearly an hour). Still keeping an eye on it.

On the previous install, its worth noting, there had been a lockup while updating. I'm also wondering if the installer had concluded things from my insufficient memory during the first install, and gave me an unstable config as a result. This is just pure speculation :)

update - i've not been able to reliably reproduce the issue, I've tried compiling packages to induce system load with no luck.

The issue sounds very similar to this reported kernel bug
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_ ... ?id=253288

I've implement the recommended adjustment (hint.hwpstate_intel.0.disabled="1" in /boot/loader.conf) and will keep an eye on it
