Help needed to get em0 up

Post by lawksalawdy »

Hello,

I need some help getting GhostBSD connected to the network. I am a retired IT professional and have used Linux almost exclusively for around 10 years so I think I know what I am doing but getting GhostBSD connected to the Internet has defeated me. I am trying to install GhostBSD on spare Intel i5 based PC with an ASRock motherboard using onboard Ethernet connection for networking. This PC runs fine with Debian dual booted with Windows 10 with no networking problems.

GhostBSD runs fine under Vitualbox with full functionality including networking, but when I try to run the Live USB on the Intel i5 PC, the system loads OK and can see the wired connection but not Ethernet (em0) hence no internet connection. I have successfully installed GhostBSD to an unused HDD on the i5 PC and GhostBSD boots and loads fine but the same problem with no Ethernet. I am new to BSD so my expertise is not quite up to making sense of ifconfig in BSD.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Hi Neville,

The device is a Qualcomm Atheros AR8171/8175 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30).

Thanks,

Your network should be called ath0 I think.
What is the output of

pciconf -lv

What happens when you click on the network icon in the panel?

Hi Neville,

Thanks for getting back to me. After reading this:

I have decided that getting any BSD going on this PC is not worth the effort. I do, however, appreciate your responding to my question.
