[Solved] Fresh Install GhostBSD 18.12 fails to start X due to drm problem

Post by strider » Sun Jan 13, 2019 4:52 am

Dear GhostBSD community,
I just successfully installed GhostBSD on my Toshiba laptop (where an install of FreeBSD 11.1 a few months ago did not succeed completely ...).
However when I boot and X starts, I just get black screen.
Looking to my boot messages I see the following :

Code: Select all

drmn0 : error: No GEM object associated to handle 0x00000300, can't create framebuffer
The laptop has a AMD HD 4200 card (so I found in dmesg) and when looking to my Xorg log I found that this card should be supported by the radeonkms driver. Note that I can switch virtual terminals quite easily and they all appear to work in the highest resolution of my laptop. So kms is working.
The following modules are loaded at boot time :

radeonkms.ko
radeonkmsfw_RS780_pfp.ko
radeonkmsfw_RS780_me.ko
radeonkmsfw_R600_rlc.ko

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi. Can you please give the output of the Xorg.0.log file. Also if possible join our Telegram group for more advice.

Re: Fresh Install GhostBSD 18.12 fails to start X due to drm problem

Post by NevilleGoddard » Mon Jan 14, 2019 8:37 am

Seems to be a bug. But there may be a workaround.

Is the amdgpu.ko module loaded?

[ 41.061] (EE) RADEON(0): Failed to enable any CRTC

Seems to be the problem. Install the drm-next-kmod package.

#pkg ins drm-next-kmod

then try
#kldload amdgpu.ko

then start as normal user

startx

and see what happens.

Good luck!

drm-next- kmod is installed
loading the amdgpu module gives the following error :

module_register : cannot register drmn from drm.ko; already loaded from drm2.ko
...
KLD amdgpu.ko: depends on drmn - not available or version mismatch
linker_loader_file: /boot/modules/amdgpu.ko - unsupported file type

It looks like you may have to use the ati drivers.

Try this
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_ ... ?id=232499

Re: Fresh Install GhostBSD 18.12 fails to start X due to drm problem

NevilleGoddard,
reading through the bugzilla bug, I indeed have the impression I'm in the same situation.

What is ironic about all this, is that I choose GhostBSD to install (instead of FreeBSD) on this laptop so that I did not need to tweak too much anymore. Wireless drivers, network configuration, graphics card configuration is done for you.
This turned out a little different ...

Now I have some knowledge of FreeBSD (did a few VirtualBox installs in the past and two real installs) but I'm far from an expert.
Could you tell me how I de-install the radeon drivers and replace them by the ati drivers ?
A link to a web page is also welcome (FreeBSD graphics Wiki ?).
Also openrc is quite new to me.
I noticed the xconfig service crashed. I do not have an xorg.conf so I assume the graphics card is detected automatically by Xorg ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

No worries. I started using GhostBSD for the same reason as you. FWIW I have a Radeon card that is set up automatically on install.
Even Linux distros have trouble with this card for some reason.
Try first checking if the packages are installed:

#pkg info xf86-video-ati

if you get the message like "No package(s) matching.....

it's probably not installed

if not already installed, install it

#pkg ins xf86-video-ati

then try

#kldunload amdgpu (Just to make sure)
#kldunload radeonkms.ko

put yourself in the video group

#pw groupmod video -m yourusernamehere

then try startx as normal user

If that doesn't work, try deleting the drm-next-kmod package and try again.

if that doesn't work try an xorg file

To set the Radeon driver in a configuration file:
Example 5.2. Select Radeon Video Driver in a File

/usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/driver-radeon.conf

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "radeon"
EndSection

if it still doesn't work, try the ati driver and edit the above file so it looks like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "ati"
EndSection

Always check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file after each change you make for hints on how to fix the problem. /var/log/messages also may give you some hints.

It's strange to me. Your card should just work.
I hope this helps. Sorry for the trouble.

By the way, do you have dual graphics cards in your laptop?

The laptop is a toshiba C650D-11J from 2010 with a single core AMD V120 processor and a separate HD4250 graphics card (shared memory).
So no dual graphics.
