Hanging During Install - 98%-ish Complete

A series of events as it unfolds...
Part A
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
I'm installing 18.10 to an external HDD via a USB 3.0 port. It seems to be stuck around 98% complete at "x ./compat/linux/etc/default/nss". It's been sitting here for ~ 1.5 hrs, see attached photo.
Part B
Haha okay literally while typing this it started going again but received an error message "tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.". Clearly hung up due to some error(s). I'll let it finish to see what happens.
Part C
It's installed, working, and seems to be all there! Very cool. The only thing is this external HDD was a bad idea on my part, it's sooooo slowww. Though the port is 3.0 I doubt my cable is. I'm going to take a wild guess that slow transfer speeds might have resulted in the error? Oh well, it seemed like a fun experiment. I'll try it again the normal way on an internal drive
I thought about deleting this but left it intact in case it helps anyone else.
Happy BSD'ing!
