I have no problem deleting the VM and starting over. Installation goes pretty fast. What is the proper way to install software under Ver 4? Compiling something like Hatari is no big deal. PearPC or Virtual Box would be a pain. I don't even know if the source is available for Opera even.

Personally, I would use packages, therefore :-
(as root, in a terminal)

Code: Select all

pkg install <packagename>

With a fresh install of Ver4 RC1

sudo pkg install hatari
Updating repository catalogue
FreeBSD repository is up-to-date
All repositories are up-to-date
pkg: Repo FreeBSD needs schema upgrade from 2006 to 2010 but it is opened readonly
pkg: need to re-create repo FreeBSD to upgrade schema version
pkg: No packages available to install matching 'hatari' have been found in the repositories

If you have problem to install hatari from pkg install it from ports:

cd /usr/ports/emulators/hatari
sudo make install clean

it will take more time to installed, but you will have more option the using pkg.

This does not work on a fresh install of Ver4 RC1 either.

cd /usr/ports/emulators/hatari
cd: The directory “/usr/ports/emulators/hatari” does not exist

The only install of Ver4 RC1 that I can get to work is on real hardware. I did have to mess around at the terminal for an hour but I don't know what combination of commands I did for pkg install <application> to work.

So what are other users doing with Ver4 RC1 after they install the OS to get pkg install <application> to work?

You need to install ports by using portsnap.

After you have install GhostBSD you need fetch the whole ports tree. The software that pkg install are precompile software from ports.

Code: Select all

portsnap fetch extract
To update your ports after you have done the above once.

Code: Select all

portsnap fetch update
Ports is the real deal on FreeBSD/GhostBSD, but since Pkgng is out I am not using ports that often now.

To search for new software to install.

Code: Select all

sudo pkg search atari
atari800-3.1.0
hatari-1.7.0
javatari-4.1
To install the software you can do

Code: Select all

sudo pkg install hatari
or

Code: Select all

sudo pkg install hatari-1.7.0
On my amd64 machine all that is working fine. But if you use the i386 image hatari might not be pkg repos.

Well I tried this approach of compiling from Source for Hatari. I figured Hatari is a 2MB object how bad can it be? Well after 15 minutes into answering all kind of questions if I wish to download X dependency and compile it wanted to download 1.3GB of some source package to compile so I canceled the installation.

For me downloading Gigs of Source to install any program is a show stopper.

When doing any kind of sudo pkg install I get the following message

pkg: Repo FreeBSD needs schema upgrade from 2006 to 2010 but it is opened readonly
pkg: need to re-create repo FreeBSD to upgrade schema version
Updating database digests format: 100%

How to I update the Schema?

Have you run

Code: Select all

sudo pkg update
Edit: No, sorry, that isn't the problem, just run it myself, along with pkg2ng just in case.

Edit2: I have just PM'ed Eric about this, so hopefully it will be dealt with soon.
