You are doing it right, the first time pkg is run it does update, then you run 'sudo pkg install <packagename>'.
eg. sudo pkg install firefox

(NB. I don't know if chromium is in the FreeBSD repositories.)

Usually if I install them it would be (G)mplayer for movies & xmms/audacious for music, (I don't use tagging, I use directories).

N.B. FreeBSD 10.0, the latest release, has changed its package manager from pkg to pkg2ng. This means that a slightly different syntax is used now, so, if you are just coming to Free/GhostBSD, it would be worth your while to use release 4.0 when it has been Beta tested. However, the (Free)BSD (10.0) kernel is '/boot/kernel/kernel', there is no '.gz', so that could be your problem.

The Mac uses Darwin, a modified version of FreeBSD, GhostBSD is just FreeBSD made friendlier.
The major difference I think you will find between Debian & FreeBSD is likely to be where new software is installed. in FreeBSD it goes into /usr/local/bin/.

You can copy to your /home as .xinitrc & modify it for your needs.
