Portinstall will be the best to use. Pkgng is a replacement of pkg_add. Portinstall is part of ports-mgmt/portupgrade.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf was not found Things like ee, echo, startx, x, xwin, and help simply do not work...commands not recognized -- ?? I will try in another computer. Thanks for any further thoughts, though maybe i have to give up on this radeon-equipped laptop. FWIW, PC-BSD DOES work out of the box -...

Xorg Ati and FreeBSD is not good combination.
I Have compile Xorg for a better supports of Intel graphics card but it seems to have cause problem for Ati.
The only thing is you should try to do:
If it successfully configure it copy xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Can you look at /vat/log/Xorg.0.log and also to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
