This might be a permission problem try to log as root to see if it work.

Portinstall will be the best to use. Pkgng is a replacement of pkg_add. Portinstall is part of ports-mgmt/portupgrade.

Xorg Ati and FreeBSD is not good combination.

I Have compile Xorg for a better supports of Intel graphics card but it seems to have cause problem for Ati.

The only thing is you should try to do: If it successfully configure it copy xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Can you look at /vat/log/Xorg.0.log and also to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
