what is on the internal hard drive?
I'm assuming this with EFI of some sort?

sounds like mate crashed.
Can you log out, then drop to a TTY (CTRL F2) log in, and remove the mate directory? This is assuming you log into your home directory
rm -rf .config/mate/
If unsure, then do not try this.
as for the speed, sounds like you need to pick a different repo

that sounds like the mate-screen saver crashing. I had to go to a TTY and kill "mate-screenaver"
as for the lack of gui, sounds like you rebooted while the system was updating, though that's just speculation.

Are you sure that the "-t msdosfs" is correct?
