Last time I tried to connect my Nexus 7 to FreeBSD 10 STABLE it didn't work - device was not recognized. BTW modern Android uses MTP protocol to connect via USB cable.

In my experience (though on Linux) smplayer is faster and lighter on resources, but sometimes it can't play video files which vlc can. Also sometimes mplayer can play a file, but has problems moving around (skip forward/back), while vlc can. So I have both.
