Yea you got the Gnome desktop I had the same problem after an update. On what I have seen it look like GDM default back to Gnome.

In the GDM login screen you can chose the MATE Desktop there is an icon that you can click on to chose the desktop you want to use.

Yes it is true and still like this. Also if you install GhostBSD make sure that the partition you setup is really the right partition and if your partition is not in order it might cause problem.
