Re: GhostBSD4.0-RC1
My md5 for RC1 was correct. Just tried with BETA3 (64bit .img). Same on both laptops, except I think I got some more text scrolling off screen before it died. On this particular laptop I am running AntiX/Linux, here it shows video as Intel i915. keith@advent:~ $ lsmod Module Size Used by ctr 2843 1 ...

Re: GhostBSD4.0-RC1
I didn't get around to it, had 'big' problems with our ISP since June, so have changed over to another supplier. I will give BETA3 a try. In the mean time here is 'kldstat' from this laptop running PC-BSD10, (it would be good to get Ghost onto it. :) ) [keith@hp-g62] ~% kldstat Id Refs Address Size ...

GhostBSD4.0-RC1
I have just downloaded GhostBSD4.0-RC1-amd64.iso to try it out, & I find that it does not boot from usb, (tried on 2 laptops). Edit:  Sorry my fault, I forgot you do .iso & .img normally - will try burning it to DVD. Error burning to disc - first attempt, Failure: Failed to close sessi...

Re: What is the best method to install software on GhostBSD?
You are doing it right, the first time pkg is run it does update, then you run 'sudo pkg install <packagename>'.
eg. sudo pkg install firefox
(NB. I don't know if chromium is in the FreeBSD repositories.)

Re: What media player you would like to see in GhostBSD 4.0
Usually if I install them it would be (G)mplayer for movies & xmms/audacious for music, (I don't use tagging, I use directories).

Re: Updating bxpkg to enable package manager.
N.B. FreeBSD 10.0, the latest release, has changed its package manager from pkg to pkg2ng. This means that a slightly different syntax is used now, so, if you are just coming to Free/GhostBSD, it would be worth your while to use release 4.0 when it has been Beta tested. If you really want to learn F...

Re: Live CD
Did you check the download (md5)?
Edit: Also, could be a faulty disc.

Re: boot ghostbsd.iso from grub entry
The instructions to do so can be found here :-
http://linuxinternationals.org/wiki/ind ... t_from_ISO
However, the (Free)BSD (10.0) kernel is '/boot/kernel/kernel', there is no '.gz', so that could be your problem.

Re: GhostBSD vs MacOS X
The Mac uses Darwin, a modified version of FreeBSD, GhostBSD is just FreeBSD made friendlier.
The major difference I think you will find between Debian & FreeBSD is likely to be where new software is installed. in FreeBSD it goes into /usr/local/bin/.

Re: Startx in BSD
You can copy to your /home as .xinitrc & modify it for your needs.
Code: Select all
/usr/local/etc/xinit/xinitrc
