I've read about this, because I've recompiled my kernel already. What I understand is that if the contents of /boot/old_kernel are the original you make a directory named GENERIC and copy the contents of old_kernel into GENERIC. Then it should update okay.

When I boot into GhostBSD the desktop will automount my windows directory twice and also some errors with hal. So I will get scsi meta-data and meta-data. download something like aptosid live cd, it has gparted which will resize your partition. If you use a uefi mainboard you could use its bootloader. Othewise, update-grub , there is also for the uefi boards efibootmgr that should be ran in linux. As far as looking at the contents of other systems, or...

I just compiled my first BSD kernel and not only changed lpt to gen but noticed that vesa is compiled into the kernel. That should explain why I had to go to the vesa driver to bring up X.
