I'm a decades old 'nix user and wanted to give Ghost BSD a spin. I downloaded the XFCE spin from Canada and borked two usb sticks when I burned the iso to them. I thought maybe they had to be burned to dvd and tried one with xfburn and the other with Brasero and the pc never found either one. Fwiw, I burned all of them with MX Linux.

Do have one question. I'm an XFCE guy and really won't run any other dekstop. To set in my ways. If I install the GhostBSD with the Mate desktop, how tedious would it be to install a full version of XFCE to it? Does the pkg manager already know what dependencies I'd need or would I have to chase them down on my own?

Smoke Here's an app to help with getting the ISO installed onto the thumb drive correctly. Currently, it works on FreeBSD and GhostBSD. Select the desktop, select the media disk, and press the Install button.

It would probably be as easy to install Xfce in the MATE edition as it would be in MX-Linux. I had no issue with burning the Xfce version to an usb stick (also using MX's USB Maker). The only glitch I can guess at for your trouble is that little choice you make at the beginning of the process, where you choose "other than MX-Linux." It's an easy one to overlook. Reformat (FAT32) those USB sticks if they're still viable, but download, perhaps, from a different site. @ericbsd, our project leader, frequently visits this forum and if it turns out that the Canadian repo has an issue with the Xfce iso he'll discover it. Which leads to another question: I assume you did the sha check to make sure? You might also try torrenting, since it helps the project.

By the way, it's been a month or so since I started testing GhostBSD and I haven't even booted into MX-Linux since I started! It's that good!

Glad you are here to test out GhostBSD on your PC. The axafacaedownloaded .iso file written into a usb flash drive, then plugged into your pc , should have been able to boot up. Questions to answer:
Do you have 4 GB of ram in the pc you tested?
The iso image is fully copied into ram memory and executed there from ram. Do you have some faulty ram, maybe?
Did the checksum of the image filematch the checksum given?
The XFCE Ghostbsd community image should have worked fine .
what graphics card manufacturer and model number do you have? Is it two graphics card optimus system? Nvidia? other graphics card?
Let us figure out why the xfce community version did not boot for you.

@Smoke installing XFCE is easy. sudo pkg install ghostbsd-xfce4 will install all packages you need.

ericbsd I did this for kicks, and was presented with an option at the slick-greeter upon reboot. So easy.

I knew to just reformat the usb sticks with gparted and got them working easy. Tried redownloading the iso and burning it to a stick again with the MX tool but this time when it starts to write it says it can't. Weird since I've never had an iso I couldn't burn with Brasero or to a stick.

Just have to decide if I want to go the route of installing FreeBSD and installing XFCE or go with GhostBSD and install XFCE.

WB7ODY It's the ram. I have 8 gigs and did a system check and found it's down to 2 gigs. Have a 32 gig box that'll be here in a few days and will try it again when it gets here.

WB7ODY to perform a memtest what are the steps? Are 9 passes with memtest recommended?
