Rod: thanks for your prompt reply. I removed ports with pkg remove, and then went ahead and restarted the upgrade. It finished with error, so I rebooted. But when it got to lightdm, all I got was a black screen with a frozen cursor block and an angular cursor arrow.
%$$E$(*&^^*
So I bit the bullet, downloaded the iso on another machine, used balena etcher to burn the iso, and reinstalled. That worked. But I still have the same problems with the trackpad on this Dell E6420: there are no trackpad controls, only those for a mouse which do not affect the trackpad, I cannot do two finger or side scroll, and the speed of cursor moves is still too slow.
So I booted the USB drive on a Dell M6800 workstation. Or tried to: the BIOS wouldn't recognize the partition, even though it's a newer machine than the E6420. So next, I booted the USB drive on an old Dell E6410, ca. 2010. On that machine, it booted successfully, but I couldn't get the wifi to turn on; "Restart Networking" did nothing.
So, I'm looking for another old, cheap laptop that will run Ghost without these problems.
