Sound settings?

I am looking for a way to check the sound settings on GhostBSD 26.1-R15.Op8 running on a Lenovo Thinkpad X230 because since this morning, I cannot play back any sound from browsers like Firefox or Ungoogled Chrome although I can play back flac files using VLC or Rhythmbox.

There is an app in the Multimedia section of the menu called "Audio Mixer" but when I select it it just shows an error screen saying that GStreamer could not find any sound cards on the system, or the Gstreamer for the sound system is not installed, or there is some issue with permissions. Perhaps it's something to do with the updates I applied to GhostBSD last night...please help!

I did the updates (more than 1000 files updated!) and I'm certain that the system is in much better shape after that but sadly the sound issue with my browser remains. I can still play back flac files with VLC (the Rhythmbox for some reason no longer works). I also found that Hydrogen can play back sequenced drum patterns ok so it seems that it's just some apps that do not work...

Stange that some apps have sound and others don't. In hydrogen which does have sound for you, what sound driver is it using in the settings?

Install a pkg called mixertui, once it is installed open a terminal and type mixertui to launch it, see what volume levels are showing there.

miscreant Thanks for the pointers. I checked the settings in Hydrogen and found that it was set to use OSS. I found that if I set this to use JACK, I get no sound. So perhaps Firefox and Ungoogled Chromium are trying to use JACK rather than OSS... but for some reason my installation of GhostBSD doesn't seem to have any place to control the sound settings for the OS (I'm currently using the community version of GhostBSD with XFCE).

I am on Xfce as well so we should be able to figure this out. Things look good in mixertui.. firefox and other browsers would not use jack by default, so they must be muted, you said your gui for (Audio Mixer) is not launching, I don't have that, I have (Volume Control) in my multimedia menu which launches pavucontrol.

See if you have a pkg called GhostBSD-sound installed, try to reinstall it if you do.
If this does not help then check if you have pavucontrol installed, again reinstall if you do.

I didn't have pavucontrol installed so I installed it and rebooted after which I could see on launching Volume Control and doing this and that that my Realtek sound card in the Output Devices tab was indeed muted. I toggled the sound card on, and suddenly the sound in firefox, ungoogled chromium, and in Rhythmbox too. Thank you for your advice!
