Making an Upgraded System Match a Fresh Install

I noticed in the changelog for the recent release of GhostBSD that there are a couple of changes that may not take effect if you were to upgrade from 25 to 26 as opposed to a fresh install.

Thinking of support (in the forums for instance) and how depending upon the path you took to get to the latest version you may need different advice, is there a list of actions one can take to turn an upgraded system into that resembling a fresh install?

Examples that come to mind are the use of zsh vs fish, the use of xlibre vs xorg, etc.

If this is the only route, that's fine. Was just curious if others had tried to track the current release without a fresh install each time. As Eric stated in his blog post,

the future of X is uncertain and tracking xorg could lead to weird side effects and CVEs and I don't expect Eric or the team to keep track of both.

Do you want zsh and xlibre included automatically when upgrading? An in-place upgrade typically preserves your existing setup, and many users may not want to be forced into switching shells or display libraries. A more conservative approach is to avoid making those changes by default. If you do want zsh and xlibre, you can always back up your system and perform a fresh install.

I don't think Xlibre's future is really proven. I do agree the future of X is uncertain. I disagree that Xlibre is right solution now. I avoided the black screens on my laptops by just installing xorg and corresponding driver on top of the black screen inducing Xlibre.

I have over a decade old Linux laptops that run just as smooth with plain labwc on Wayland compared to Openbox on xorg. All without menu bars nor background desktop components as I don't need any of that desktop environment overhead on old laptops.

I'm looking forward to KDE 6.X on FreeBSD/GhostBSD for my daily driver once Wifi 5 is functional with realtek 89 wifi driver.
