There is an important distinction between the GhostBSD project and the GhostBSD community.
The GhostBSD project defines the official direction of the operating system. At present, MATE is the supported and default desktop environment. XFCE began as a community-driven effort, but Eric, as project owner, has since brought it under official support. Any change to the default desktop, including whether Gershwin becomes standard, remains a project-level decision under his authority.
The GhostBSD community operates alongside the project and is free to explore, prototype, and advance alternative approaches. Initiatives such as Gershwin, Wayland, LabWC, and KDE Plasma are community-driven efforts. These can evolve independently and, if they demonstrate stability, value, and sustained interest, may later be adopted by the project. As more serious developers contribute and participate, the scope of what can be supported by the project expands.
As a member of the community, you are encouraged to initiate and lead new efforts. Community innovation is not only permitted, it is expected.
