I've been messing about with the default MATE build on an old HP tower with an i3-2100, integrated graphics, and 6MB of DDR3. The ethernet works, the wifi works, sound works, the audio buttons on the HP keyboard work, the DVD drive plays music CDs and if I install libdvdcss then it will play movie DVDs as well. All in all no complaints of live mode other than having to install libdvdcss.
Installation went without a hitch, but the BIOS couldn't see the UEFI boot loader so I reinstalled with rEFInd and that was picked up. I think a BIOS reset would do it some good as it still remembers having had proxmox and PopOS installed on it previously.
After install I was annoyed that on launching the terminal that I was harassed to generate a .zshrc file. It would be nice to have a sensible default .zshrc provided if practical. I've only recently started using fish so the switch to zsh isn't a big deal to me, but may catch some off guard.
Other quirks:
- system-info shows
(null)for the MATE Version in the Mate System Info window.
- The clock was off by 17 hours and I had to manually set it.
- Setting clock preferences to display weather or temperature cause space for them to be created, but nothing shows up on the panel.
I am pleased to add that switching workspaces with ctrl + alt + left/right does not cause MATE to become unresponsive as it does now on my daily driver. ETA - The issue goes away on my daily driver when I remove the workspace switcher from Plank Reloaded and add one to the panel instead. Something about adding the switcher to the MATE panel cleans things up.
