How to update Discord app?

I installed linux-discord 0.0.119,1 from the Software Station recently and it launched and worked fine for a short while. But then suddenly it wanted to update itself just like it does on Linux every week or two and it now won't launch successfully. It instead pops up a message that says "Must be your lucky day, there's a new update" (ver. 0.0.120) and forces one to either download the .deb file immediately or tar.gz archive, or alternatively select 'I'll figure it out' from the dropdown and then backs out of the app.

So I'm not sure how to proceed here on GhostBSD to get the app working again, unlike on Linux where one simply downloads the .deb file. right clicks it and installs it with the GDebi package installer to update Discord to the new version and continue from there. I don't think it can connect to any servers unless it is running the very latest version, even on Linux.

Since everything is built from ports, GhostBSD as a project needs to build updates more often.

I try to build every week, but lately I have been focusing on the upcoming release.

I will get a new update build going.

ericbsd Thanks for the quick reply. With the regularity of Discord updates, and the necessity for the latest version, I understand that this is an ongoing commitment, so much appreciated. Is it recommended that the current linux-discord should be uninstalled somehow, which I am not even sure how to do? Or just leave it alone until the new update build is in the software station?

I think a direct vendor artifact import might be a partial solution. I know how to do this using Axiom, but I haven't published how to do that yet. Once the solution matures, it would be possible to add a feature to software station and have software station kick off an Axiom job to fetch from sources, not ports, and build the app in a reproducable way. We would have ghostbsd built packages, ghostbsd ports, and axiom (reproducible) software builds.

vimanuelt I've avoided using third party Discord clients in the past because I read that one can get banned from the service for using them. Not sure if that's the case with these apps. I'm managing with using Discord in Firefox browser for the time being.

codytherudeguy I'm on IRC as well, but it's no substitute for Discord for the many people who use it as a platform for communities they are interested in, to play games with voice chat, to live stream podcasts, and other features far beyond IRC's capabilities.

IRC still exists on Libera Chat under #ghostbsd, but it is no longer advertised on the website since I rarely check it.
