I have just installed the system with the default MATE desktop but maybe something is off with my home folder. As soon as I ran the MATE terminal I got a warning about a missing .zshrc file (and indeed I don't have any). Also, zsh appears to be the default shell. So I booted the live ISO again and I noticed that the default shell is fish instead, and the terminal indeed uses the fish settings with autosuggestions and highlighting. Also, the live ISO has some stuff that I don't have in my installation like a .config/fish folder and dotfiles like .fehbg, .xinitrc, .xprofile. Is that expected or has my user's setup failed to complete successfully? thanks in advance and have a happy new year!
