As GhostBSD continues to grow, much of its progress depends on the dedication of developers who contribute their time and expertise without direct financial compensation. While some core members of the project receive limited support, many others maintain ports, develop software, fix bugs, and improve the user experience in their own time and at their own expense.
To help make ongoing contributions more sustainable, I would like to propose that we formally encourage the use of Open Collective as a platform for supporting these independent developers. Open Collective offers a transparent and community-friendly way to receive donations, making it easier for users and organizations to offer tips or financial support to those who contribute but do not otherwise benefit financially from the project.
This would not replace existing funding channels for the core project but would supplement them by providing a way for contributors to receive optional, voluntary support. It respects the community ethos while offering a practical tool for those who want to give back to individuals whose work they appreciate.
By promoting this model, we can make it easier for contributors to stay involved long-term, offset personal costs, and feel supported by the community. I believe this approach would help strengthen the sustainability of the GhostBSD ecosystem and ensure that those working quietly behind the scenes are not overlooked.
I welcome feedback and discussion on the topic. :-)
