Here is a list of technically neutral alternatives that steer clear of political entanglements and focus purely on functionality and user experience.

One of the reasons I like Xfce so much is because it is "slow;" meaning there are seldom any big, sudden changes like some of the others have. It may be the best replacement if you're looking to do that, but I would keep MATE for as long as it lasts. Slow = Stable!

I agree with "Slow = Stable", I don't mind if development has slowed down. Another one to consider is Trinity Desktop (what MATE is to Gnome, Trinity is to KDE). They just had a new release as well: https://www.trinitydesktop.org/
