Greetings.

"support and help requests" seemed like the best place for this, but I'm not actually sure if that is what it is.

I am, or was, trying to mount an exFat file system. I found the instructions for ghost here: [https://wiki.ghostbsd.org/index.php/How_To#mount_exFat](https://)

..following them, I was about to create /media/"mount point of my choice" ... only to check, and see that, apparently, the mount point was already there, and.. looking inside it, all my files were visible. they are also visible in caja. so.. it seems that my device got automatically mounted? I am actually really confused, not sure what to do. It would appear that ghost is much more like linux than other bsd's in that external drives get automatically mounted? if so, then that wiki should maybe be updated? I'm quite keen on not breaking anything, which means that the temptation to wait until somebody responds to this is quite strong.

Heads-up: Many wiki pages for GhostBSD are outdated and don’t reflect the current state of the system. Features like automount, pkgbase, and service management have changed significantly. When in doubt, refer to recent GitHub commits or ask in the community before following any deprecated wiki instructions.

Notice: The GhostBSD wiki is deprecated and no longer maintained. It is no longer referenced on the official GhostBSD website. Please do not use the wiki as a source of truth, as much of the content is outdated and may not reflect the current state of the system.

For up-to-date information:

If you do not see the expected behavior of a command or previous behavior in an application that is now missing, you can either create a bug report or a feature request.

  • 🐛 Report a Bug: Submit a bug report here.
  • ✨ Request a Feature: Suggest a new feature here.

Our hope is to field questions and provide answers in GhostBSD documentation instead of making people search for answers on a Forum or on Telegram. Providing you a single source of truth and provide a consistent location for answers seems like a reasonable path forward. We will follow up with an answer in the GhostBSD Docs and provide you the link to the answer.

The answer is posted here: GhostBSD-Community/Documentationblob/main/docs/en/E000-essentials/100-mount-external-drives.md

The GhostBSD Community GitHub site is dedicated to developing a new subject categorization system. This initiative aims to enhance the organization and clarity of documentation for the official GhostBSD website. The categorization process is ongoing and will take time to finalize.

Just to be clear, it is not an official GhostBSD repository.

Think of it as a shared workshop with a large table where I am laying out all the pieces, sorting, refining, and carefully assembling them into something coherent and useful. This is a long-term process and it may take a few years before everything finds its proper place and form.

This space serves as a buffer. It protects unfinished work from being prematurely changed or overwritten and gives me the freedom to focus on structure, clarity, and SEO.

Contributions are certainly welcome, but like an editor assembling a final draft, I am mindful of how everything ultimately fits together. Once the content has matured, I would love to see it merged into the official GhostBSD site.

Until then, hosting it here avoids creating a patchwork of broken links in the official documentation. If links must break, let it be in a community workspace, not in the canonical source.

vimanuelt Very interesting. I have now checked out the documentation, and I must have a special version of the os. My situation is still that I am able to just connect the external drives, and they appear to mount automatically. ..which is great, really, less typing for me to do.. :-) [I'm not well-versed enough with these operating systems to be clear on the benefits of requiring all these things to be done manually, beyond making sure people know how to do them]

vimanuelt ..woops.. the page you linked to seems to have vanished.. I am still trying to figure out how my system works.. (I take breaks, come back). at the moment, it seems that I can see my files via the command-line, but not in caja, which I'm trying to understand.

vimanuelt ..I find myself wondering if I didn't show proper appreciation. well, I didn't. there was a lot of material there, it had to have taken a long time to write it all down even if it was right there in your head. so: thank you!! ..that said, I'm hardly the only person the info will be relevant for, so.. ..shrug.. ..hoping the info hasn't gotten lost somewhere, you put a lot of effort into it!
