For MATE desktops, use a Compose key which allows you to type accented characters using sequences.
- To set a Compose key:
- Open System →**Preferences ** → Hardware → Keyboard → Layouts → Options.
- Look for Position of Compose Key and choose a key (e.g., Right Alt).
- Example:
- Press Compose, then
'
(apostrophe), then e → é.
Setting a keyboard layout in MATE Desktop (GUI)
Open: System →**Preferences ** → Hardware → Keyboard
Go to the 'Layouts' tab.
Click 'Add' → Choose English (US, International with dead keys)
or your preferred layout.
Remove the old layout (optional).
Click Close.
