Robin ..I cd'd. i think it just wouldn't have worked otherwise, would have told me there was no such file. ..there is no doubt that the program runs, and does -something-. This is one of the things I liked about RodMyers answer, he provided me with advice about how to deal with software I download that doesn't come from repositories or ports. In other words, how to keep my computer clean and organized. I intend to thank him more formally once this issue is resolved, and if we don't manage that, I'll do it anyway :-) ..I actually just changed the name of the folder to /temp . Realized it was more appropriate. :-)

For the record, I had to get a move on. I flashed the usb with ventoy with ubuntu, put on the windows iso, and installed it. The computer has now been returned to the store. Thank's everybody for the help, too bad the timing didn't work!

-> I -will- be adopting bsd, either free or ghost, but will be doing it with another old dell I have.

wb7odyfred Hi :-) ..I've actually fallen even further down the rabbit-hole now. I have a brand-sparkly-new fresh-from-the-factory T430 that I've just installed OpenBSD on. ..I did an 'extensive' research into the different bsd's, and became enamoured by it's minimalism, the code-audits they claim to do. The fact that it is supposed to be the most secure operating system.. is kind-of an afterthought, and apparently a simple consequence of having a system that has been cleaned up to that extent. Of course, now I feel like I've just landed my space-ship on an alien planet. All I know is that the landmarks I want to visit apparently -are- there, and the natives are friendly. And I know a smidgen of the language, and have all the archeologists notes. yipee!! ..I'll just take my time actually getting out of the ship.. -_-

The /dev/da0s1 is a BSD slice /dev/da0p1 is a GPT partition, maybe /dev/da0s1 is a MBR formatted partition. see what gpart or the Linux Gparted tool shows you to be written on the Disk Partition table.
