had that problem, too in the beginning.
My problem was, I didn t have a device in /etc, that could be found or mounted.
I manually added /dev/cdrom (where there was only /dvd(rom)) in my tree and put that in /etc/fstab:
/dev/cd0 /cdrom cd9600 rw, noauto 0 0 and saved and rebooted.
Then tried with vlc and audiocd-functions (and possibly missing codecs installed?) and: voila!
Sometimes the mount function is the trick to be solved, but in my case, these settings above DID the trick.
Was there a group to be added, too, in my case to "hank"? I don t rem. now...
