Failure during installer

Post by maxrussell »

The installer is failing part way through (but not always at same point).

The log is giving a message that rsync is failing, then unmounting the install:

pc-sysinstall: Starting Extraction
EXITERROR: ERROR: Failed to copy (rsync) files
Running: swapoff /dev/ada0s1b
swapoff: /dev/ada0s1b: Invalid argument
Unmounting: /mnt
Running: umount -f /mnt
Unmounting DVD/USB media: /cdmnt-install
Running: umount -f /cdmnt-install

I can't believe we still have that problem.

Yeah? As a new user, I can't either :)

I was concerned this might be HW related (as I've bought a new SSD and it is the first time I've tried one...)

Is there something I can do to get past this issue?

Hard to say, I did not have this error for a long time, but I am starting to think that the problem is unionfs, we are using unionfs to have the whole live system writable, but for a lot of users, they can get to GUI and DE so I was able to reproduce that and it crashes. So Joe had a similar issue and when waited that pointer stop spinning and started the installer it was fine.

Other than that I have no idea since I am not on that machine.

I've tried multiple times and I've selected pretty much all the available options for the filesystem. UFS and variants, ZFS, 4k block.

Was thinking of blanking the drive with a utility like disckill and trying again.

Regarding this - where people were seeing the failure during install, were they able to successfully install later, or just give up?

Probably not! It is probably a system memory. Joe and me are working on making a new live system with better RW, and I will some make a change on the installer that should solve that problem. So until then, I doubt you will be able to install GhostBSD.

I am sorry about that.

Okay, I'll keep an eye open for the new, improved live system. Thanks!

EDIT - looks like folks have encountered issues in the past FreeBSD side - http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/docs/html/ssd.html

I have been using an SSD for a while and I did not have any problem with it, but it worth to read it.

Can the SSD be setup as per that wonkity link via the live disc installer?
