[Solved] Fatal server error - no screens found

Post by Subit Piano »

Hi! I am new to BSD -- I downloaded the LXDE verxion and get stuck at
fatal server error - no screens found
This whether i I try the safe option or not. ginstall, gbi, startx, etc., do does not work

Toshiba A125 AMD-64 but using 32-bit LXDE' ATI graphics card.

Take it easy on me! I can do a lot of command line in Linux but BSD is a whole 'nuther ball game!

Can you look at /vat/log/Xorg.0.log and also to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

I'm having the same problem. I've tried both the CD and USB versions, on two different Lenovo ThinkPads, a T40 and T60. (The T60 is currently running PC-BSD 9.0.) Although I would prefer LXDE, I am currently downloading the Gnome CD iso and will try it.

In the meantime< I am not sure what I am looking for, but:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf appears to be blank.

Looking at /vat/log/Xorg.0.log, the first errors regard the different fonts directories, which are not found and are deleted from the path. It fails to change owner/group for /dev/dri/card0! and /dev/dri! Some other points:

[ 29.869] drmOpenDevice: Open failed

[ 30.383] drmOpenByBusId: Interface 1.4 failed, trying 1.1

[ 30.383] (II) RADEON(0): Kernel too old missing accel information, assuming accel is working

[ 30.420] (EE) RADEON(0): Kernel nodesetting setup failed
[ 30.420] (II) UnloadModule: "radeon"
[ 30.420] (II) Unloading radeon
[ 30.420] (II) UnloadModule: "exa"
[ 30.420] (II) Unloading exa
[ 30.420] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[ 30.420]
Fatal server error:
[ 30.420] no screens found

Update #1: I get the same result with the (usb) Gnome version of 3.0. I am currently downloading the .ISO for 2.5 and will see what happens.

Update #2: Using the GhostBSD 2.5 LXDE CD, I end up at the desktop with frog wallpaper and two desktop items ("WiFi-Note" and "GhostBSD Installer"). I am debating whether to install 2.5 and then trying to figure out what needs to be done to upgrade to 3.0

Xorg Ati and FreeBSD is not good combination.

I Have compile Xorg for a better supports of Intel graphics card but it seems to have cause problem for Ati.

The only thing is you should try to do:

Code: Select all

Xorg -configure
If it successfully configure it copy xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Thanks. I'll look into that.

I had to turn my attention to another computer -- a netbook with a trashed Windows installation -- so I've installed GhostBSD 2.5 LXDE on it for now.

Sorry for the delayed response -- i I didn't get an eamil that there were responses. I'll have to check into that...
Now trying the openbox version but with no more success.
Anyway, Xorg -configure did not work.
Booting stops at

Code: Select all

ums0.5buttons and [XYZT] coordinates
ID=1
so i I hit ENTER and get

Code: Select all

cannot read termcap database
using dumb terminal settingss
and a prompt
Eric, i I assume you meant var, not vat? I tried

Code: Select all

/var/log/Xorg.0.log
and got

Code: Select all

bad dir ino 1353 at offset 0;
mangled entry
/etc/X11/xorg.conf was not found
Things like ee, echo, startx, x, xwin, and help simply do not work, commands not recognized?? ?
I will try in another computer. Thanks for any further thoughts, though maybe i I have to give up on this radeon-equipped laptop. FWIW, PC-BSD DOES does work out of the box but a 4.5 GB installation without even including an office suite or browser??!!?? ? I'm a minimalist.

This mean xorg.conf is not there. I had just today the chance to try GhostBSD on ati laptop and it was not working. I have fix Intel problem but cause other problem. Its hard to fix problem on the hardware I don't have. But I'm looking further to solve that issue for the next release.

I will try to finish the next installer version for 3.5 as fast than I release a stable version for testing it.

Cool! I mean, i I play around with this stuff -- so, yeah, fix the issue for the sake of the OS but don't do it just for me!

hi,

I have got the same problem, but I've installed on other partition FreeBSD 9.2 with XFCE4.0 xorg.conf working just fine, without errors.

I was trying to install GhostBSD 3.5 MATE on DELL GX280.

Any solutions so far?
