exactly my friend!
and for me an extra dose of patience and clear view... LOL
but as always, this old man here needs his time to get through, so bare with me... :D

stay now with Midori & Seamonkey tog. with Padre as Perl IDE and hope, i can concentrate now on stuff to learn than stuff to repair..... although that helps learning, too! ;-)

cheers

Thank You ASX, same to Eric!

last feedback before Easter weekend:

- 99% running again, 'xfce4-notes' is dead after upgrade, will have to find out why...
(something about 'missing proxy connection' and several error messages with 'GTK-lib xxx and NULL' when started via command, closes too quickly to read all)
- switched from web-based MariaDB-Admin to 'mycli' on commandline for the moment; saves a bit RAM and boosts my ability to understand things better without a "shining graphics tool" ;-)

well, since that quarterly upgrade, several things went strange:

- not only the gtk/xfce4-notes problems but also:
- pids not closing regularly, have to be terminated - again that bl***y Xfce power-manager and something with ntpd and 'leapsecond file' and 'console-kit-daemon'..
- CUPS does configure my USB printer right but it doesn t print, although job seems to go through.. maybe some queue probs or permissions?
that didn t happen before the upgrade.

OK,

I can live with most of the obstacles so far, but that I can t get the CUPS and printer thing goin, is really a challenge!
'messages' as well as the error.log of CUPS really don t give real hints, it completes the job but the printer doesn t react at all...
what am I doin wrong?

Possibly nothing.

Try to add a new printer (use a different name) and see if that help.

is this "candid camera" or something??
I deleted the old printer, add a new, gave 'location' a new name and suddenly it prints..... GOSH.... is that because CUPS is Apple or..... "candid camera"???
don t believe it!
ONE thing was different this time: I could add. choose from gutenprint-drivers, which were NOT there in the 1st place, strange...
but thx anyway ASX, last obstacle for the moment solved... :-)

Glad it worked! And no, it is not candid camera, are issues with software updates of some sort.
