I have been a long time Xfce4 user and then have Fluxbox as my backup wm, but I am trying out GhostBSD and I am enjoying using MATE.

I use:
1. Mac OSX El Capitan;
2. LXDE on Ubuntu;
3. KDE on FreeBSD;
4. Mate on GhostBSD.
Everything for development (web, mobile and desktop).

To me, DEs are out, if a window manager has its keybindings convoluted (read openbox), is out. I cannot waste time going to menus and clicking. Not to mention the RAM waste, thus, speed is where is at; looks mean nothing to me.

JWM, Icewm, and Ratpoison.

xfe -file manager
mirage -image viewer
nano -word processor (save everything in .txt)
scrot -take snapshots
flburn - burn isos (small and simple)
hexchat
xdgmenumaker - includes menus for JWM, menumaker does not.

On linux, any distro, for me it has to be Cinamon.
Most used apps, again on linux: FireFox, Thunderbird, Geany (lightweight gtk editor), Transmission (torrenting). Although most of my time is spent on the command line.

With GhostBSD and Linux I really like MATE, with FreeBSD rather WindowMaker. Compared to Linux (Debian, Ubuntu ...) WindowMaker and all the nice Apps like GNUMail, all the GNUStep stuff is still very useful and tiny at the BSDs, runs on old machines absolutely nice.

With GhostBSD I use MATE. For my favorite applications I use an additional panel on the left hand side. It is brilliant.

On Linux I used KDE, Gnome, Cinnamon and also MATE. I stick with MATE. I don't need all the gimmicks.

I use OpenBox with tint2 and rofi. I have hotkeys for faux tiling window management.

I like MATE that installed with GhostBSD. First ride on that DeskTop for me. Also have Awsome Window Manager on here. Coll WM that works right out of the box on install. Mile long config file if one chooses to do so.Seems to be no limitations on what can be done there.
Good tutorial vids for all that kind of stuff at Distrotube.
