I guess You intend to let me go crazy completely...
On GhostBSD 10.3 I kept FreeBSD repos where s no functioning Chromium anymore.
And on 11.1 after Gimp 'disappeared' and update station appeared there s no Libreoffice anymore either.
When will these construction sites stop?

Ok, I hope Libreoffice will return, too.
I ll do a fresh new installation this evening and maybe found a more stable way for wlan.
Will tell You more.

Hi there

Well, as the problem(s) continue with non-working/disappeared packages, unstable and weak wlan as well as non-existing addons for Mozilla browsers on BSD base I decided to put a Windows 10/openSUSE Linux dual-boot system up for most work but continue with GhostBSD on my netbook for some while.
There the 10.3 version with the FreeBSD repos works after the last major upd. pretty well, except for a non-working chromium.
But a complete office, my fave Seamonkey combination as well as MywebSQL and stable wlan are important for me for productive reasons.
So I ll keep in contact for BSD developments, hope for a used Lenovo laptop soon and will try again then.
Thanks for all the help but it s urgent now to get a stable dual boot working for my job preparations as well.
And all configs for three different wlan chipsets did not bring the stability I need to work from my room about 5 meters away from router.
Merry Christmas to everyone and til soon.

Atheros Wifi Driver updated at revision r306323

Solution update source files for ath and recompile
https://hk.saowen.com/a/6a6dbbadbcab8be ... b78753ba53

I could track 11-stable, but I want to stay as close as possible to the current -RELEASE so that future security updates are as predictable as possible from a feature-set perspective. In light of this requirement, we check out the 11.1-RELEASE branch:

# svnlite checkout https://svn.freebsd.org/base/releng/11.1/ /usr/src

### I find no file "/usr/src/head" directory to change into here. I am stumped to find solution. Maybe run kernel rebuild statement below?
# cd /usr/src/head/sys/dev/ath
# svnlite merge -r 305614:306323 https://svn.freebsd.org/base/head/sys/dev/ath/ .

Create a custom build configuration and kick off a build:

# cd /usr/src/sys/amd64/conf
# cp GENERIC ARCBSD
# make buildkernel KERNCONF=ARCBSD

I give this as a hint. I am still working through these steps and have not verified each command line statement.

Hi wb7...

well, after lots of experimenting I must say, with a "user friendly system" I don t expect to start kernel compiling and havent done so for years anyway.
But thanks for the hints.
Right now my main working system is a OpenSUSE Linux 42.3 and I work on GhostBSD 11.1 via ext. USB disk.
I hope, some more wlan chips will work in the future and esp. the package management will become more stable, as it was with 10.3.
That s what caused me to work mainly on my netbook for now with Ghost 10.3 and with Linux on my main machine but that could change again later this year..

Hi Folks

I just made the last repository upd and have now found a stable way for wlan with GhostBSD 11.1:
found an old Dlink GWL-122 with Ralink 2070 chipset that gives stable internet now.
So older Ralink and Realtek seems to work best for now!
if I get through this horrific parametric stuff for the headset now, I d have 95% of all done.
will try this next weekend.
But I ll keep it on ext. harddrive til I m sure I ll switch completely to win10 & ghostBSD dual-boot! ;)
it s still some way to go and my main backbone will be the netbook with GhostBSD 10.3 for some while.

cheers

About the headset issue, it probably means GhostBSD hasn't or can't configure the audio pins properly. The good news is I had the same problem on FreeBSD 10 and fixed it.
Also on my old laptop the headset works properly out of the box.

if you run dmesg -a or look in /var/run/dmesg.boot you may find something like this:

hdaa0: nid 0x as seq device conn jack loc color misc
hdaa0: 20 01014020 2 0 Line-out Jack 1/8 Rear Green 0
hdaa0: 21 99130110 1 0 Speaker Fixed ATAPI Onboard Unknown 1

The columns as means association, seg is sequence nid is node ID.

There is a file /boot/device.hints which you can edit to change the behaviour of these pins and you can configure the speakers to mute when connecting headphones.

In this case putting these lines in /boot/device.hints will do the trick:

hint.hdac.0.cad0.nid20.config="as=1"
hint.hdac.0.cad0.nid21.config="as=2"

You have to change the nidXX numbers and the "as" numbers according to your Acer machine.

It was so long ago when I did it but I remember it worked perfeclty.

Some help here https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/10451/ and here https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?que ... ease-ports

By the way, what audio chip is the Acer using?
Hi Neville

well, after quite a while I managed to try out now on my HP laptop, everything is running smoothly except that headphone subject where Your hints didn t quite work out; it looks a bit different here after the look in /var/run/dmesg.boot.
no "seq" parts I could find but the audio chip seems to be a Conexant CX20549 (Venice) but some entries are a mystery for my, so if You can tell me what to adapt in the mentioned files above, I d be happy.

Hi, Achim.

What is the exact problem with your headphones?
Do you get no sound at all with the headphones or do you get sound with both headphones and speakers when you plug in the headphones?
You can try the following:
try putting this line in /boot/loader.conf:

snd_hda_load="YES"

or put it in rc.conf in the kld_list line

snd_hda

I can't see any line in the photo you supplied referring to headphones, which is strange.

Hi Neville

well, first of all I noticed as well, there are no headphones in dmesg.boot, some drivers are missing and the parametres You mentioned are different to non-existent in my configuration.
I was wondering myself about completely missing drivers as on my Acer laptop the headphone subject doesn t "work" at all - same way as on my HP laptop!
The snd-loading option in loader.conf didnt work either unfortunately, it s still ONLY the speaker (for.ex. when desktop startsound comes up) but no sound on headphones at all.
I tried several sound support but I cant change from OSS to another sound option in the sound mixer, but at least OSS recognizes the Conexant CX20549 (Venice) correctly, except for any headphone. ;-)
As this happens same way on my Acer laptop, is this maybe some generally missing support for headphones by GhostBSD 11.1 or just a strange configuring/compiling on my systems? as it works fine with 10.3 on my Asus netbook.
It s the only feature I m really missing right now besides not having a genuine Chrome browser for Netflix, but using Chrome on Linux works fine for me.
But all of my radio and music listening stuff could be shifted to BSD as well, but without headphones not an option.

BTW: sorry for that lousy picture I sent, with that cold (almost over now) I forgot what platform that was to post screenshots on and this was the fastest way for the moment... ;-)
