Re: Builder machine disks layout

I'd also suggest to get the server up and running first (so we don't make ASX wait longer than necessary! ). Perhaps we will have to rethink the layout again or something once we have more information about the building process on that machine. It may be easier to pick the right kind of SS...

I have no idea what's is the prices of SSD's out of America.
A 480 GB SSD is currently priced around 140 EUR (200 CAD) according to Amazon.

Re: Builder machine disks layout

Since that leaves plenty of room on both HDDs, what about making one partition on both for a simple ZFS mirror and put the OS on that? The benefit of having the OS mirrored is that if the system disk dies we don't have to reinstall FreeBSD but can simply boot of the remaining HDD This was also my i...

Re: Builder machine disks layout

of course, that's just my idea of that, please comment about, ;) Sounds like a plan! Re: building our repository

kraileth I say we go for your boss offer! Is it possible install FreeBSD in one SSD and having a full SSD for SWAP it is just an idea? Is there any value of doing that? Excellent! Thanks for the trust that both of you put in me. I'll tell my colleague that he can order the missing RAM and I expect ...

Re: building our repository

Yes, it's 70 EUR for that server. We can basically extend it however we please, there won't be any change in price for that. Depending on what kind of server it is, we usually charge a one-time fee for hardware upgrade and such tasks. However I can do it myself in my free time either during break or...

Re: building our repository

From a price/performance point of view, the Canadian hoster is the winner: https://www.soyoustart.com/ca/en/offers/e5-sat-2.xml There's no doubt that this is the better machine to start with. But if we opt for that one then we won't have SSDs if I read correctly (do we need those if we have the dou...

Re: building our repository

Well, if RAM is the most important issue here, that's something where I unfortunately cannot do anything. In that case we should probably consider the external option if there's really a lot of benefit to it (is there if we're building weekly?). (Still I'm not sure how a company like soyoustart can ...

Re: building our repository

Eric: Looked up the spec. It seems like the board is indeed limited to 32GB RAM in total. However we could add up to 4 SSDs in addition to the two HDDs. And having nice fast swap space spread across multiple SSDs leaves us enough room for improvement IMO. I'd also say that if we should really need t...

Re: building our repository

Ok, here's the current situation: My colleague took a look around what hardware we can spare for a rather cheap price. Most of that stuff was... rather dated and most of the boards could not even take 32GB RAM! The worst ones even were DDR2 only. However my boss talked to him afterwards and allowed ...
